[quote:f61ed]Rice, 42, made his decision over the weekend at home in San Francisco, then returned to Broncos headquarters and met with coach Mike Shanahan. He played 20 NFL seasons.
"This is a happy day," he said. "I think the tears that you see basically is that I have really enjoyed this ride."
Shanahan confirmed what Rice already knew - that he would be a fourth or fifth receiver, at best this season - and Rice confirmed what many figured - that he would rather call it quits than be a bit player with the Broncos.
Rice signed with Denver over the summer, reuniting with Shanahan, who was his offensive coordinator in the 1990s in San Francisco. For Rice, the idea was to play for a coach who was familiar with him and for a team that could help him go out a winner.[/quote:f61ed]

Sad indeed : (
:), good thing he retires, the longer the person stays in the league past his prime the more they don't retain their greatnes sin the eyes of everyone...but it is hard to ever wear out in our minds when you have all the records he has.

He still had it in him. They just wouldn't give him the ball.
He'll be in the HOF in 5 years.

Without a doubt the best receiver ever in professional football.
More importantly, a class act guy. Reminds me a lot of Karl Malone.

There arent alot of classact recievers like Rice was. Now we have to put up with Owens and Moss who are great football players but also they are pricks. I have the utmost respect for Larry Fitzgerald (even though he came from PITT) because he is a great reciever and a great guy. WVU>PITT!!!!!!!11
