China passes Taiwan secession law
Chinese soldiers
The threat of force is a key element of China's Taiwan policy
China's legislature has passed a law giving it the legal right to use force against Taiwan if the island declares formal independence from the mainland.

The National People's Congress voted in favour after President Hu Jintao told the army to be prepared for war.

China sees Taiwan as its territory and says it reserves the right to use force if "peaceful re-unification" fails.

The Congress was also expected to pass a further significant increase in Chinese military spending.

China's announcement last week of the anti-secession law drew criticism in Taiwan and from US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

'People's determination'

In Monday's session of the Congress, the anti-secession law was passed unanimously by a margin of 2,896 to zero.

Delegates broke into applause when the law was passed, the Associated Press news agency reports.

China's second leader, Wu Bangguo, said the law "represents the people's determination not to allow Taiwan to be separated from China by any means or any excuses".

As passed, the law calls for the use of "non-peaceful and other necessary measures" if hopes for peaceful unification are exhausted.

On Sunday, Mr Hu told China's army, which has expanded rapidly in recent years amid growing concern in the US, to put national defence "above all else".

Taiwan split from China during a civil war in 1949 and has maintained de facto independence ever since. [/quote:4c4dc]

I'm not sure we would keep that pledge. China is no joke, we would lose alot of soldiers.

China and the US are the two big boys on the block. Could you imagine if one of the big boys backed down to the other? That means there's only 1 big boy now. I don't see the US backing down.

Also, something that affects our Australian friends:

If I feel threatened, I'll probably sign-up for the army. I know if Australia gets dragged into this one, we probably will too.

Note: If I feel threatened.

There's a couple of problems in south-east asia at the moment....Look at Indonesia, country is just way too big for itself. We liberated East Timor, but there's no telling how long it is before they waltz back in there.

We've already once come REALLY close to war with them in the last 5 years.

I'd say the next 5 years we'll definitely see some kind of hostile action from them....Same goes for China.

Don't worry, if it turns into a combat zone I'll pick up doom in my blackhawk and we'll be on our way over.

and again it has absolutely nothing todo about Tiananmen Square, as that was chinese students protesting then chinese soldiers dispersing of them. If the worse happens with this it will be China going to War against Taiwan. nub.

I would like to see the world react to Chinas attack on Taiwan because i dont really think the world will do anything about it other than sanctions. I doubt anyone has a very good plan on repelling a Chinese attack. It looks like this fight was going to happen eventually, might as well be now. I dont know, maybe im just giving the Chinese too much credit.

the proper way using sanctions is the better, as threatening with more force only makes things worse.

They must have some sort of plan to have passed such a bold bill. I will tell you this, If Taiwan declares their independence, Chinese soldiers will by swarming within minutes to take the island by force.
