Consider that the North Americans were busy advancing and holding land while the Russians and Germans were taking defensive positions at some point during the war. Defensive positions lend themselves to sniping.

I believe that the Canadians are routinely some of the best sniping teams in the world these days.

Canada's best sniper was James Bedford MacArthur, with about 9 confirmed kills.

Think I posted this a long time ago. I remember it had more canadians on it though. A different list probably.

US,Britain,Canada,etc had snipers but not at the number the Germans or Soviets did.

Movements of the forces had to do with the kills too, as tomxtr said.

i know the USSR trained a shit load of snipers, the Germans also trained alot of snipers too, but USSR was all about the sniping.

this list only contains Russian and german snipers. Their are supposedly 1 Canadian, and few british & north americans that need to be on the list, Their was a top 100 list before. Also note that these snipers have alot more then just their confirmed kill count, if you included the unconfirmed.

Yeah, I think WWII snipers usually did their duty without someone around to confirm their kills...as they often tended to work alone most of the time.

Except for Russia. They usually had full squads of sniper teams, working in 2-4's or something.

Snipers/sharpshooters are still quite common in even normal russian light infantry squads. Out of eight men, there would always be a couple guys armed with Dragunovs, which are supplemented by PKM's and the like.

The russians had 15 sniper schools. 66% of those went up during the battle for stalingrad. one or two of which was led by Vasili Zaitsev. Though the russians had the most confirmed kills from snipers and were very much feared by the germans, it was the germans who out number the russians in schools 3:1 and snipers 15:1. Unlike the russians german snipers were trained to sit and wait, which is why they were so widely feared throughout the Allied forces, and were also very good at concealing themselves and their shots. just an FYI..their "unconfirmed" kills outnumbered their confirmed 3:1, which would put them well over the russian sniper count biggrin:
